Solomon's Foreign Wives and Apostasy

1 Kings 11:1-13

Chapter 11
1 And King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, Hittite. 2 from the nations of which the LORD had said to the sons of Israel, "You shall not enter into them, and they shall not enter into you; surely they will turn your heart after their gods"—Solomon clung to love with them. 3 He had seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines, and his wives inclined his heart. 4 When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not whole with the LORD his God like the heart of David his father. 5 Solomon went after Ashtoreth the god of the Sidonians and after Milcom the cultic uncleanness of the peoples. 6 Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and he did not fulfill his duty to the LORD as David his father had. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable thing of Moab on the mountain that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the detestable thing of the sons of Ammon. 8 In this way he made incense altars and cultic altars for all his foreign women for their gods. 9 And the LORD was angry with Solomon because his heart turned away from the LORD God of Israel, who had appeared to him two times. 10 He had commanded him concerning this matter not to go after other gods, but he did not keep what the LORD commanded. 11 And the LORD said to Solomon, "Because this was with you and you did not keep my covenant and my statutes that I commanded you, I will tear the kingdom from you and give it to your servant." 12 But in your days I will not do it, for the sake of David your father; I will tear it from the hand of your son. 13 However, I will not tear away the entire kingdom. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.
